FLE 133 CONTEXTUAL GRAMMAR EXERCISES ON PARALLELISM

First Task;

Our beagle loves to hunt.  When someone opens the back door for her, she barrels down porch steps into the yard. Then she runs back and forth across the lawn in ecstasy.  Her nose cruises the wet grass for smells; smells of cats, of rabbits, and of humans to detect them. She sniffs and spins her tail in quick circles. First it spins clockwise, then it spins counterclockwise.  These two activities, sniffing and spinning, always occur together. They seem to propel her along.

Second Task;

The Government Printing Office in Washington D.C., is a source of useful information. Unfortunately, only a few people know about it.  It is the official publishing house for the federal government, which publishes pamphlets and books on a vast number of subjects.  These range from the dangers of X-rays, from home TV sets to the identification of mushrooms.  About 27,000 publications are offered through the Superintendent of Documents.  Many of them are inexpensive and some of them aren’t even charged!

 Third Task;

The man who reaped America’s first fortune was John Jacob Astor. He was a German immigrant, who made his initial money through trading Indian furs. Although Astor was lowborn, uneducated and never learned to speak English properly, he carried on his business to the end in an accent. His accent was redolent of the Hamburg gutters.

Reflection task: Create an imaginary person

HELEN
Let me intraduce you to Helen. Helen is an average heighted and weighted woman who has a smoothly shaped face. Her long honey brown hair and her big blue eyes match perfectly to her little nose, which her husband, Dave, loves. Yes, she is married and has four adorable kids. She is already 38 years old and she hadn’t had a bad life. Lots of doors were opened and lots of opportunities were offered her. She grew up in several countries because of her father’s job. This of course has some good and some bad sides. One good thing for instance is that she can speak English fluently because she went to international schools wherever they went. This is one of her main reasons why she wanted to study in the US later on. There she studied psyologie and that’s also what she does now. She works in a Therapy Clinic. But no, she didn’t meet Dave there. That is an ordinary story; she met him at collage, they were only friends for a couple of years which turned in to love afterwards. Anyways, Helen loves to eat! Especially cookies! Cooking is not really her passion but she loves to draw! That’s what she does to flee from life. She is cute and humorous but unfourtanitaly not everyone understands her sarcasm. Also she is very honest, maybe sometimes too much... She just says what she thinks. But that is sometimes what people need to hear, not the lies, not the “I’m good thank you” answers but the truth. Only be warn; she can be really scary when she is angry! So don’t make her get angry at you! Life and existence is what she still question a lot. She has not found the divine truth and love yet. This is what is on her list nowadays.
